Dental implants are usually made out of titanium and are shaped similar to roots of teeth. They are placed within either the upper or lower jawbone depending on which teeth need replacing. A single implant may support one or more artificial teeth. In suitable patients, the procedure can be carried out in-surgery. With modern techniques success rates can be very high and the longevity of implant can be excellent. Dr Fayaz Ladak will soon be bringing implant placement to P.R. Jones & Associates, if you require any further information please ask your dentist.

In suitable patients and when carried out by a dental professional tooth whitening can be a very safe and effective procedure. Under the supervision of your dentist, teeth whitening can be completed in-surgery or at home. Both methods produce excellent results and you should ask your dentist which method is most suitable for your needs. Teeth whitening doesn’t affect the strength of your teeth, the only side effect that is sometimes experienced is sensitivity, but this will subside after a short time.

One of the effects of smoking is staining on the teeth due to the nicotine and tar content. It can make the teeth yellow or brown in a very short time. Drinks such as tea and coffee can also cause staining. Regular visits to the dentist and by using a correct brushing technique can help minimise stain building up.

In addition to the damage smoking can have on the rest of our body, it can also severely affect the tissues within the mouth. In particular, smoking is one of the biggest risk factors for gum disease. Teeth can become stained and discoloured. Smoking can also increase the risk of you developing mouth cancer. Your dentist can give you advice on how to stop smoking and will also screen your mouth for signs of mouth cancer and gum disease during examination visits.

Fluoride is a mineral and can be found naturally in many foods and water and in some areas is added to drinking water. One part of fluoride for every million parts of water (1 ppm) has been shown to have the greatest effect in improving dental health. It can reduce the risk of dental decay by strengthening tooth enamel and by reducing the amount of acid that is produced by plaque bacteria. Fluoride is also found in toothpaste and you can significantly reduce the risk of you developing dental decay by using fluoride toothpaste.

Amalgam is a filing material that is made from a combination of metals. It has been used in dentistry for many years and is still commonly used today. Millions of people have amalgam fillings. Much research has been conducted into the safety of mercury in amalgam and this has shown no evidence into significant health problems related to its use.

Most teeth can have white fillings placed. Two types of material can be used, either composite resin or porcelain. Composite fillings tend to be placed in front teeth and for smaller cavities in the back teeth. Porcelain can be used to crown or veneer suitable teeth. Your dentist will advise you as to which is the best option for you.
